Ranger Andrew Regiec, Gettysburg National Military Park Join Ranger Andrew Regiec to explore the courage and sacrifice of the 134th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. As Confederate Forces overwhelmed U.S. 11th Corps on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, one brigade was moved into the town, to keep thousands of United States Soldiers from being cut-off and captured. Of the brigade’s three regiments, the 134th New York went into the battle with nearly 400 men, only about 32 made it to their fallback position that evening.

Crazy Quilt Stocking Workshop at Fort Wadsworth

We are pleased to offer tours of the museum and of the historic church, Monday to Friday, at the following times: 10 AM, 12 Noon, 2 PM and 4 PM.  ( From January - June, we are also open the second Saturday of each month, noon to 4 PM. ) 
These are reservation-recommended tours, of 45-minute duration. In the museum, the current feature exhibition is, "The Emergence of a National Historic Site: St. Paul's Between the World Wars". Other displays explore the American Revolution and the Lenape, the original inhabitants of the St. Paul's area.  In the church, visitors observe and learn about the significance of original appearance of 1787, and also gain an appreciation of the use of the edifice as a military field hospital during the Revolutionary War. Other features include the 1830 Erben, one of America's oldest working pipe organs.  Brief recitals are avilable upon request.  Please use the  <a href="https://www.recreation.gov">https://www.recreation.gov</a> website for advance reservations, and please arrive ten minutes before your scheduled tour time.

Talk Story with Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Engineers

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence, the National Archives and the National Park Service are collaborating on a special project to transcribe Revolutionary War Pension Files of more than 80,000 of America's first veterans and their widows, containing more than 2 million documents. These records may contain valuable details about Revolutionary War veterans and their families, such as rank, unit, period of service, age, residence, date and place of marriage, and date and place of death of spouse. You may find copies of marriage or other family records, information pertaining to military activities or details about soldier's lives, along with letters, diaries, or family trees within these records. Become a citizen archivist and unlock the details and stories found within these rich records!
Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park and the Upton Historical Society will be co-hosting a transcription event on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, from 6-8pm in the Upton Community Center (9 Milford Street, Upton, Massachusetts). Participants will learn about the value of wartime pensions and hear service stories about patriots from the Blackstone Valley. Rangers will provide training on how to access pensions and transcribe these vital records online. Are you ready to join us and contribute to the nation's 250th anniversary?

Revolutionary War Pension Files Transcription Event

President Thomas Jefferson, a scientist as well as a statesman, worked closely with Charles Willson Peale, the leading portrait painter of the Founding Fathers, to advance early American science. As members of the American Philosophical Society, they hosted Alexander von Humboldt, helped uncover mastodon skeletons in New York, and supported major expeditions including Lewis and Clark.

An ongoing archeology project at Prince William Forest Park is studying an area known as Hickory Ridge, which was a mixed community before the park was established. This study included talking to descendants of the Hickory Ridge community and combining those stories with an archeological survey. The archeological work for this project wraps up this winter and we'd like to share some of their work with you! On January 14, visitors are welcome to watch an excavation and ask questions of park staff between 10am and noon. The Cuyahoga River Valley has supported a rich agricultural heritage for more than 1,000 years. Through an innovative park farming program that began in 1999, these cultural landscapes are preserved and protected in active, ecologically sustainable farms. The program invites farmers to live and farm on park-owned properties using sustainable methods appropriate for a national park. Eight farms currently operate on land leased from the park, growing and raising a diverse array of crops and heritage breed animals.
Join us to hear from Kyla Werlin of Oxbow Orchard, Sasha Miller of PurpleBrown Farmstead, and Mark Trapp of Trapp Family Farm on their practices and what to look for from their farms in the coming year.
ABOUT THE FARMS
Oxbow Orchard - Oxbow Orchard is a diversified farm that uses regenerative agriculture principles. They raise Icelandic sheep, chickens, and turkey as well as seasonal fruits and vegetables, seedlings, and flowers. They have a farmstand and a local food shop.
Purplebrown Farmstead - Purplebrown Farmstead grows a resilient and productive food forest. This includes cider apples, diverse fruits and nuts, vegetables, herbs, flowers, mushrooms, and complementary animal products.
Trapp Family Farm - Trapp Family Farm is a sustainable mixed crop-and-livestock farm. Draft horses have provided the power since its inception in 2012. Eggs, produce, and meat are sold seasonally on site. They strive to be part of a small, resilient community that is supported and sustained by healthy people, plants, animals, and soil.

You are invited to the Winter Meeting of the Agawam Historical Association as we begin a year of events commemorating the United States Semiquincentennial.
Following the creation of the Continental Army in 1775, General George Washington and his lieutenants organized a system of supply and logistics to support the fledgling American military as it fought for independence. Brigadier General Henry Knox, Chief of Artillery, personally sited a military supply depot at Springfield, Massachusetts early in 1777. Hundreds of enlisted tradesmen poured into town to begin building, repairing, maintaining, and shipping all sorts of military supplies, and Springfield was quickly bustling with activity throughout the American Revolution. Join Springfield Armory National Historic Site Curator Alex MacKenzie as he reveals the hidden stories of the Continental Arsenal at Springfield and the contributions of the region to American independence.
This event is free and open to the public.
Alex MacKenzie is a museum professional, author, and historian specializing in U.S. military history, with a focus on small arms development, logistics, and supply. He has authored numerous articles and publications on the technical and industrial history of small arms centered on the Springfield Armory (1777–1968) and is a leading authority on the management and care of historic firearms and ammunition in museum collections. He has developed museum policy for the National Park Service, contributed to publications on collections care, and regularly consults with museums nationwide. He serves as Curator of Collections at Springfield Armory National Historic Site and resides in Belchertown with his wife and two daughters.

Join a ranger in Franklin Park to compare the impact and legacies of three iconic Americans: John Barry, a founder of the U.S. Navy, Benjamin Franklin, a Founding Father of our country, and President Woodrow Wilson, founder of the League of Nations. Wilson visited Franklin Park in 1912 to dedicate the Commodore John Barry Memorial, and the park sits in the shadow of the historic Ben Franklin School.

Join USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory gas specialists Tricia Nadeau and Christine Sealing on a 2-mile/2-hour walk through the fumarolic area of Kīlauea volcano’s summit known as Haʻakulamanu on the Sulphur Banks trail. Why do volcanoes emit volcanic gases? How does the composition of gases at Sulphur Banks differ from gases being emitted from within Kīlauea’s caldera? Come on this walk to learn the answers to these questions and more. We will meet at the Kīlauea Visitor Center and end at Wahinekapu (Steaming Bluff). Start/end location: Start at Kīlauea Visitor Center and end at Wahinekapu. Walking distance: 2 miles (3.2 km) round-trip.

Join Ranger Adam for a guided ski tour of Valles Caldera National Preserve. Listen to the sounds of Valles Caldera in the winter and learn about the connections between nature's soundscapes and the wider ecosystem. Participants will leave the sounds of urban life and technology behind to discover the sounds of nature and the unique ecology of Valles Caldera.
For this program, guests must bring their own skiing equipment. Rugged cross-country skis or light telemark and alpine touring setups are recommended with fish scale patterns or skins. Split boards are also fine. Participants are encouraged to bring water, snacks, and appropriate winter clothing. Depending on snow conditions and guest wishes, the tour will leave from the Volcano Discovery Center and go for a 4-5 mile loop on groomed trails. This is a strenuous route at altitude that requires proper hydration, nutrition, and physical conditioning.
Registration is not required.

Winter Soundscapes Strenuous Ski Tour

The Sunset Stroll is a leisurely, ranger-guided stroll through the gypsum sand dunes. It is a splendid opportunity to experience the dunes first-hand while learning about the uniqueness of our geology, plants, and animals. As an added bonus, the stroll is timed to end at sunset, providing a panoramic view of the sun setting over the mountains and the potential for some breath-taking photographic opportunities.

Chickasaw National Recreation Area staff will host “Eagle Watch” on Saturday, January 10, 2026, and Saturday, January 17, 2026. Both watches will start at 9 a.m. inside the Travertine Nature Center and continue later in the morning at Lake of the Arbuckles. After a lunch break, additional activities will be offered at the Chickasaw Cultural Center. Eagle watchers should meet at 9 a.m. at the Travertine Nature Center for a ranger presentation about bald eagles. Afterward, visitors will use their own vehicles to follow park staff to Lake of the Arbuckles. Spotting scopes will set up at designated eagle “hot spot” locations. Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars if they have them. Additional activities will be hosted at the Chickasaw Cultural Center in the afternoon. — Springfield Armory National Historic Site will host a free, family-friendly commemoration on Saturday, January 17, 2026, 12:00–3:00 p.m., marking the 250th anniversary of Henry Knox’s daring “Noble Train of Artillery.” The event honors the 300-mile winter expedition that brought captured artillery from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston, an achievement that helped secure one of the Continental Army’s earliest strategic victories.
This anniversary program will feature engaging living-history demonstrations and educational experiences that highlight the hardship, ingenuity, and teamwork that defined Knox’s remarkable journey. Visitors will learn how this pivotal mission shaped the opening months of the Revolutionary War and influenced America’s path to independence.
Superintendent Kelly Fellner stated: “This commemoration is about more than reenactments. It’s about honoring the determination and teamwork that shaped the earliest days of our nation, the contributions of citizens in Springfield and the surrounding towns, and ensuring these stories remain alive for future generations.”

Special recognition will be given to the Knox Trail communities of Westfield, West Springfield, Springfield, Wilbraham, Palmer, and Warren—towns that continue to preserve and share the history of Knox’s route. The commemoration continues Sunday, January 18th with an original musical production For Love! For Liberty! at <a href="https://52sumner.com/events-and-tickets/">52 Sumner Theater</a>.

Please join us for our FREE Forest Wellness Program! Relieve the stresses of your everyday life by taking the time to reconnect with nature and your inner forest. Join a certified Yoga instructor and our Volunteers for a 2 mile (round trip) guided walk and Yoga class amidst the tallest loblolly pine trees in South Carolina.
Please meet at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center. All you need to participate is yourself, a water bottle, tennis shoes, and comfortable clothing. In the event of inclement weather (rain, extreme cold, etc.) this event will be cancelled. 
Pets are not permitted on this program, service animals are welcome.

Everyone is invited to the annual "Wreaths Out" event in the Shiloh National Cemetery. Help rangers and volunteers remove wreaths that were placed in the cemetery during the Wreaths Across America event. No registration is required, just arrive a little before 11:00 a.m. at the gates of the national cemetery. Gloves are recommended.

In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, this program will explore the echoes, evolutions, and tensions between the ideals of 1776 and the realities of 1861.

Some experience is preferred. You must be at least 8 years old and able to paddle. You must wear completely enclosed shoes (no sandals or flip-flops). Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat. Join Manhattan Project National Historical Park rangers at the K-25 Overlook across from the K-25 site to learn about the construction, operations, and legacy of the K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant. One of three uranium enrichment facilities in Oak Ridge during the Manhattan Project, K-25 was the largest building in the world during World War II.

We will be planting native plants around a newly constructed pond to create more habitat for the endangered San Francisco Garter Snake and threatened California Red-legged Frog. It will be a muddy day tucking in new plants among existing young ones. We will be hiking less than 1 mile on and off trail, on uneven terrain, and in slippery conditions. Rain boots or waterproof hiking shoes are recommended.

Ranger John Hoptak, Gettysburg National Military Park For General George Gordon Meade, service to the country did not end at Appomattox. Instead, it continued until his dying day, which occurred on November 6, 1872, just seven-and-a-half years following the end of the Civil War and less than ten years after his triumph at the Battle of Gettysburg. Join Ranger John Hoptak for a look at the overshadowed and oftentimes glossed-over post-Civil War career of George Meade, which, among other things, included his efforts to deter the Fenian Brotherhood from invasions of Canada, his role in Reconstruction, and his July 1869 return visit to Gettysburg to help dedicate the recently constructed Soldiers’ National Monument in the National Cemetery.

History Talk: Entertaining at the White House - Presidential China

Join University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo geologist Meghann Decker for a comparative walk down the Devastation Trail. Learn about the geologic features along the trail and compare the 1959 Kīlauea Iki tephra field and cone (Puʻu Puaʻi) created by lava fountains up to 1,900 feet high, to those forming from the ongoing 2024-2025 Kīlauea summit eruption. Discover how lava fountains and falling tephra have similarly and dramatically altered the landscape during the 1,500-foot-high fountaining episodes of the current eruption.  Time/duration: 10 a.m.; 2 hours long Start/end location: Start at the Devastation Trail parking area.

A tale of two eruptions: Lava fountains of Kīlauea in 1959 and now

During eruptive episodes at the summit of Kīlauea over the past year, volcanic gas and tephra are carried downwind. During trade wind conditions, most material is transported to the southwest. Larger tephra particles fall on the ground within 1- 3 miles (1-5 kilometers) of the eruptive vent(s), with the highest concentrations immediately downwind of the vent(s) in the closed area of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Light particles, including Pele's hair, can be transported greater distances, 10 miles (15 kilometers) from the vent downwind. As sulfur dioxide is transported downwind, it reacts in the atmosphere to form the visible haze that is observed downwind of Kīlauea, known as vog. In celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence, the National Archives and the National Park Service are collaborating on a special project to transcribe the Revolutionary War Pension Files of more than 80,000 of America's first veterans and their widows, containing more than 2 million documents. These records may contain valuable details about Revolutionary War veterans and their families, such as rank, unit, period of service, age, residence, date and place of marriage, and date and place of death of spouse. You may find copies of marraige or other family records, information pertaining to military activities or details about soldier's lives, along with letters, diaries, or family trees within these records. Become a citizen archivist and unlock the details and stories found within these rich records! 
Blackstone River Valley National Historical Park and the Pascoag Public Library will be co-hosting a transcription event on Thursday, January 22, 2026, from 6-8 pm at the Pascoag Public Library (57 Church Street, Pascoag, RI). Participants will learn about the value of wartime pensions and hear service stories about patriots from the Blackstone Valley. To mark the 250th anniversaries of the American Revolution and the founding of the United States, a coalition of local non-profits and government agencies will present Washington in American Memory, a seven-part speaker series. All events take place at the Cambridge Public Library, and will also be livestreamed.
Explore how Americans have remembered, reinterpreted, and reshaped the meaning of the American Revolution from 1776 to today, featuring:
