Ahkima Honyumptewa - Hopi Weaver and Painter
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday — December 24, 25, 26, 2024: 9 am to 4 pm each day.
- While beading is not a traditional Hopi art form, Marie Honyumptewa first learned to bead from a young age and started producing greater amounts of work in 2009. She wanted to take up a craft and began incorporating Hopi symbols to make the work her own and represent her community. “Creating art comes from the heart and I enjoy expressing my tribe's symbols in another art form.” - Marie Honyumptewa
- Ahkima Honyumptewa, a member of the Hopi snake clan, has been an artist since he was young, painting mostly kachinas, along with landscapes, people and animals. Weaving is something he learned later, when encouraged by family and friends. Over the years, Ahkima has mastered the traditional Hopi styles and patterns and he also creates contemporary blankets and clothing. The quality of his work has been recognized by collectors from around the world.
- The Cultural Demonstration program provides an opportunity for park visitors and community members to interact with tribal artisans from Grand Canyon's traditionally associated tribes - and for them to share their history and crafts, along with the skills, knowledge, and efforts involved in creating their craft and art.
- This series is made possible with grants from Grand Canyon Conservancy.
